About artificial intelligence (AI) in writing.
Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of various industries, including writing. This technology has revolutionized the way content is created, reviewed, and analyzed. AI-powered writing tools are now capable of selecting, adapting, editing, and publishing written content. At what point do we draw the line between the role of AI in writing and the creative contributions of human intellect?
My writing background.
I never was much of a writer. Or a reader, but more of a reader sure. I don´t think myself of as an artist but photography is quite interesting so I do that. I have just begun my journey as a writer with this blog. Sure I study at the moment and I write quite a lot of reports at school but that´s a different kind of writing. I haven´t had a major writer’s block but I still felt that AI was something I was interested in. It would be cool to check it out and maybe harness it as a tool for inspiration. Does that make me a lazy bastard? No, exploring AI as a tool for inspiration does not make you a lazy person. It simply means that you are open to utilizing innovative technology to enhance your creative process.
I have tried several AI writing tools.
Let´s make it clear that I don´t advocate for complete reliance on AI in the writing process. Instead, it should be seen as an adjunct to human intellect, a tool that can offer inspiration and assist in certain aspects of the writing process. I have tried two AI writing tools, and I'm impressed by their ability to generate ideas and suggest improvements. Well, technically three if you count Grammarly. It´s an AI proofreader and since English is my third language I felt that Grammarly was a helpful tool for improving my writing. No one likes bad grammar. You can use Grammarly plenty good free though it has some of the finer features behind the paywall. The other two AIs I have put to the test are Jenni.ai and Chat GPT. I have found them to be incredibly helpful in terms of generating ideas and improving the overall quality of my writing. However, it is important to note that while AI can assist in generating ideas and improving writing, it should not replace the creative contributions and critical thinking of the human writer.
The Jenni.ai.
Jenni.ai I really liked though it´s a bit mixed bag. Jenni.ai suggests sentences, partial sentences and if left to it will write whole paragraphs a bit like Chat GPT but more on that later. I have written many texts with Jenni.ai and I really like how it paces the writing for me. I rarely use it´s suggestions but they keep me on my toes about how to control the train of thought or where to lead the topic. There are no empty moments to just stare at the blinking cursor since it always makes a suggestion if you wait a couple of seconds. If you let Jenni roam free it will go in circles with its ideas quite quickly. Sometimes it declares something is a reference but half the time they have no backing. The price is also quite steep if you pay monthly and not annually. Jenni is around 20 bucks monthly. The Jenni.ai tool, while a bit clunky, has its pros and cons but with it and Grammarly watching my back, I do feel quite confident writing no question about it.
The Chat GPT.
Chat GPT, on the other hand, is a more versatile writing tool that offers not only suggestions but also immediate feedback and revision suggestions. Its ability to generate original but derivative text has raised concerns about plagiarism and academic integrity, rightfully so. Educators and institutions are grappling with how to address the potential misuse of Chat GPT and similar AI tools in order to maintain academic integrity. The difference between Chat GPT and Jenni.ai is that Chat GPT has a broader range of capabilities, including giving immediate feedback and revision suggestions. It also can change its writing style, you can ask it to only give headings and or write just one sentence in every paragraph or fill in within the given word count if you give it your writing. Behind the paywall lies DALL-E, a powerful image-generating AI, and many other sophisticated features that offer a wide range of applications in various fields. AI doesn´t feel like a gimmick anymore. I like how Chat GPT is more of a friend you can negotiate and interact with. It understands context and can adapt its responses to suit the specific needs of the user. If you really think about it, if you let Chat GPT write your whole blog post for example, that´s like asking your colleague to write it for you. Uncool. Fun tool though for brainstorming if feeling a bit low on inspiration. Chat GPT Plus subscription which lets you use all the bells and whistles costs a few bucks more than Jenni.ai but offers much more. Just be mindful of how you use it.
Conclusion.
Overall, both Jenni.ai and Chat GPT have their places. We shouldn´t be afraid of embracing the power of AI in our writing and creative processes but be cautious of potential plagiarism and misuse of AI tools. It's important to remember that you are the one pressing the buttons. The human brain you have been gifted is a marvelous machine. No AI will be as capable as that when it comes to writing and arts. However, AI tools like ChatGPT can serve as helpful aids in generating ideas and providing feedback. They can save time and assist individuals with weak writing skills, but it is essential to use them responsibly.
